Cat Accessories: the guide to choosing well

All the advice you need to find the ideal model.

The four needs to cover, in this order

Before buying anything, know what you're covering. A cat needs to scratch, perch, hide and hunt. Most regretted purchases come from doubling up on a need that's already covered while another sits empty. A home with three beds and no scratching post will have couch problems, no matter how much you spend.

The scratching post comes first

It's the cat accessory that prevents the most damage for the least money. A cat scratches where it walks, not where you decided. A sisal post placed along its usual route, near its bed or the couch it's wrecking, works far better than a perfect model set up in a room it never crosses. Also check that it can stretch out to full height: a scratching post that's too short gets ignored.

Then, height

An indoor cat has lost its upper floors. Without a tree or shelf, it will claim the top of the wardrobe or the kitchen counter, and that negotiation is lost before it starts. A cat tree by a window, in a room where you actually spend time, covers the need for a perch, a hideaway and often a scratching spot in a single piece.

What happens around water and mealtimes

Two simple habits make a big difference. Keep water away from food and the litter box, because a cat doesn't drink where it eats. And slow down fast eaters with a feeder or a snuffle mat, rather than scolding them for regurgitating. Both fixes are free or cheap, and they can save you a vet visit.

The most common mistake

Buying too much at once. A cat adopts new things one at a time, and five items arriving on the same day often all end up ignored. Introduce one accessory at a time and wait a week, and watch what your cat actually uses. It's the best way to learn what your cat needs, and it's worth more than any advice out there, ours included.

Kitten accessories: the starter kit

For a kitten, five things are enough at first: a scratching post at its height, a bed with high sides, two or three toys with no small parts, a water source away from its food bowl, and a carrier for the first vet visit. The rest can wait until you know its personality. Start with its cat bed, its cat toys and its cat carrier.

Indoor cats: burning off energy

A cat that never goes outside builds up energy it burns off at night, often on your feet. Two short play sessions a day solve a good part of the problem: the cat laser triggers the chase, as long as it ends with a catch. For very active personalities, the cat exercise wheel gives back the running they're missing. And for their claws, a cat nail clipper used every three to four weeks prevents snags.

Water, meals and height: the rest of their territory

Accessories don't cover everything. For hydration and mealtimes, our cat food dispensers and water fountains help them drink more and eat at regular times. For height, nothing beats a cat tree by a window, and a cat tree for apartments is plenty in a small space. A cat that can scratch, perch, hide and hunt is a cat that leaves your couch alone.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which cat accessory should I start with?
The scratching post. It prevents the most damage for the least money, as long as you place it along your cat's usual route, near its bed or the furniture it's ruining.
What are the basic needs of an indoor cat?
Scratching, perching, hiding and hunting. Most regretted purchases come from doubling up on a need that's already covered while another sits empty.
Why does my cat ignore its scratching post?
Most often because it's poorly placed or too short. Cats scratch where they walk, and they need to be able to stretch out to full height. Move it next to the couch your cat is damaging before buying another one.
Should water be kept away from food?
Yes, and away from the litter box too. In the wild, a cat doesn't drink where it eats, since water near prey is considered contaminated. Moving the water bowl is sometimes enough to get a cat drinking again.
How many accessories should I buy at once?
One at a time, waiting a week in between. Five new things arriving on the same day often all end up ignored, whereas a single item introduced on its own gets observed, then adopted.
How do I know what my cat needs?
By watching what it already does: where it sleeps, where it scratches, where it perches, what time of day it gets restless. An accessory that builds on an existing behavior gets adopted; one that tries to create a new behavior goes unused.
What cat accessories do I need for a new kitten?
A scratching post at its height, a bed with high sides, two or three toys with no small parts, a water source away from the food bowl and a carrier. Add the rest one item at a time, once you know its personality.
What cat accessories keep an indoor cat busy?
Ones that give back the chase and the run: toys with unpredictable movement, a laser that ends with a catch, an exercise wheel for very active cats, and a cat tree for height. Two short play sessions a day count for more than the number of items.
